For our October weekend event, we will be hosting an indigo dyeing workshop led by Takato Nishimura, an indigo master, dyer, and artist based in Fushimi, Kyoto.
Indigo has long been a familiar part of Japanese life. Growing the plants, harvesting the leaves, fermenting them to create dye, and dyeing the fabric—you will experience indigo firsthand while reflecting on this traditional harmony between nature and humanity.
On the day, you can choose from several techniques—such as solid dyeing, partial dyeing, "murakumo" (cloud-pattern) shibori, or shibori using rubber bands and marbles—to dye clothing or fabric you bring with you. Enjoy creating a one-of-a-kind piece, with colors and patterns that vary depending on the item and technique used.
